Classical dance is not what you think...

And that's good news!!!

What if preconceived ideas about ballet are preventing you from taking the plunge?

Since opening All That Dance, I've had the chance to meet hundreds of people passionate about dance. And among them, there's a proportion that touches me deeply: those who are hesitant. Those who write to me, who walk past the shop, who watch videos online… but who don't yet dare to start.

When I ask them the question, the answers are all similar:

"I'm not flexible enough." "I started too late." "I don't have the physique." "It's not for me."

I understand where these thoughts come from. Movies, social media, reports on major corporations—they all show us the dazzling end result without ever showing the path that leads there. And this image, however beautiful, has discouraged countless people before they've even put on their first pair of slippers.

The reality of ballet is much more accessible — and much richer

Classical dance is demanding, that's true. "Humblingly," as they say in English, meaning it invites you to humility from the very first weeks. But not for the reasons you might imagine.

What she asks of you has nothing to do with your natural flexibility, your age, or your body shape. She asks for patience. Perseverance. An ability to observe, to listen, to start again without getting discouraged. And often, adults who begin classical dance bring with them qualities that young students are still developing: concentration, discipline, body awareness.

What I've observed in the shop, year after year

Over the years, I've seen beginners of all ages and skill levels, with very different stories. And those who progress the fastest aren't necessarily the most flexible or the youngest. They're the ones who arrive with curiosity and a genuine desire to learn.

I've seen women in their forties blossom in their first ballet classes. Parents who started at the same time as their children.

Classical dance doesn't require you to be perfect before you begin. It requires you to begin.

Before you begin, here are a few useful facts to know.

To avoid unnecessary frustrations and false expectations, here's what I'd like to tell you today:

  • Progress is slow, and that's normal. Don't compare your beginnings to the years of work others have put in.

  • Flexibility is acquired. It is not a prerequisite, it is a result of work.

  • The right equipment makes a real difference. Wearing climbing shoes that are suited to your foot, your level and your activity changes everything — for comfort, technique and confidence.

  • Age is not a barrier. There are courses for adult beginners, and they are wonderful.

  • You're going to have doubts. That's a normal stage. Keep going anyway.

Want to get started? I'm here to help you.

At All That Dance, my mission doesn't end with selling you a leotard or ballet slippers. It begins with listening to you, understanding your level, your practice, your goals — and advising you honestly.

Classical dance isn't reserved for a certain type of person. It's for you. And the first step is often the simplest: walking through a door.
